Utah from CA, Looking for a pull off spot south of las vegas
Hi
We are on our way to Utah in a week and thought we would leave late one night and try to find a spot to pull over to spend the night. I was thinking maybe something between
Barstow and Las Vegas. Is there any place maybe around the state line area.
Any parking lot camping at the casino's? We have a Pull trailer.
Any suggestions would be helpful.
Thanks
DW
RE: Grand Canyon campgrounds (for big rigs)
I have to disagree with Lauren. The Grand Canyon Railway Campground in Williams is the way to go. It is a fairly new campground, large pull through sites, full hookups, 50 amps, and all the privileges of the hotel. It is about an hour drive (not 1 ½ hour) and the line into the park is not bad at all in the morning. Drive to the park. Do not take the train. The train only gives you 3 hours in the park, which is NOT ENOUGH. The scenery is not pretty along the train route. The drive is a very easy drive and has a little more to see along the way. When you do visit The Grand Canyon, take a drive through Trailer Village and you will be very glad you DIDN’T stay there. From Williams you can also take a day trip to Sedona, which is just a bit longer drive than The Grand Canyon. A beautiful drive and Sedona will just blow you away. Along the way you can stop in Flagstaff, A college town with many eclectic shops and eateries. There is more to do in the area if you have the time to explore. Oh, and don’t forget to explore Williams while there. It is part of the original Route 66 and has many shops in the historic buildings. There are plaques on the front of the buildings that tell what they originally were. Seriously, you will be missing alot if you stay in the Grand Canyon park and that is all you see.
Sams Town campground in Las Vegas is our favorite. Nice place although it is a bit out of town from the strip.
Grand Canyon campgrounds (for big rigs)
I'm starting to plan next summer's trip - a trek from Chicago to the Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Yosemite and points in between. We have a large motorhome, so a lot of campgrounds won't work for us. Can anyone recommend a big rig friendly campground near either rim of the Grand Canyon? We need either an electric hookup or the ability to run the generator without too many restrictions. I'd also welcome recommendations as to campgrounds near Vegas or Yosemite as well as must-sees. Thanks!
Main Street Station RV park las vegas
Can't find much information on this RV park. Was wondering if anyone here has ever stayed there? And if so do they have restrooms and showers in the RV parking area?
RE: Where to stay on trip from LA to North Rim GC
We found that driving from LA to Hurricane, near Zion, is a fairly decent one-day drive -- I think it's only about 150 miles beyond Las Vegas. And we liked this park -- plenty of shade:
Nice park in Hurricane
The turnoff to the North Rim is just a few blocks away. Where are you going to stay at the North Rim? There's a nice park at Jacob Lake, but it's about an hour away from the rim itself. If you can get national park, the campground is great. And there is a really nice campground (DeMotte) in the national forest, just outside the park.
And don't forget the unlimited boondocking in the national forest!! It is terrific.
RE: Where to stay on trip from LA to North Rim GC
I made reservations early this morning and have 3 nights in North Rim and then 3 nights in South Rim. Can't change it, as we need to be able to drive back in 1 day to LA and it looks too long from the North Rim. I am thinking about making a reservation at the Kanab RV Corral. Looks like it is 471 miles from home and should take 8 hours. They said they are about 200 miles from Las Vegas. The DW really doesn't see any need to stop over in Las Vegas. We don't gamble and don't need to pig out on the food. Plus the triple digit heat is another factor. It would cost $50 for the site for 1 night, $40 in cab fare and $40+ for food.
My Google map shows to routes, one northern thru Zion and the other southern thru Fredonia. Google suggested the southern route.
We went to Zion last year. That northern route would take us thru the tunnel. Don't really need that.
Where to stay on trip from LA to North Rim GC
We had to postpone our trip to Oregon and are heading from LA to the North Rim of GC. Last time, we stayed at the Oasis in Las Vegas. It's only 5 hours from home and a 105 degrees there. I thought we could go on for another 3 hours and stay somewhere cooler. Any thoughts?
RE: las vegas Resort (Holiday Travel Park)
Stayed at Las Vegas Resort in January 2008 for a few days. DW will not go back. Unfortunately, it was crowded, paved (no flora) and (relatively speaking) unfriendly. When we returned to Las Vegas later in our winter trip, we stayed at Oasis...much better in terms of site size, people (campers and staff), noise levels. Of course, you said you didn't want the "resort" type of park, so it might be a non-starter for you anyhow.
Big Rig Friendly Campgrounds - Zion and Bryce
Looking for advice regarding visiting Bryce and Zion National Parks. We are unable to leave northern Indiana until the 6th of September. Trying to decide if our tenative plans are feasible in regards to weather.
We are fulltimers and don't like to travel more than 250-300 miles in a day. If we don't get to Bryce until the later part of September are we risking icy weather? We're thinking of heading to Las Vegas when we leave Utah. Wouldn't mind seeing the north rim of the Grand Canyon if that is doable that time of year.
Also looking for big rig friendly campgrounds in the area. To give you some idea of what we like in a campground, we are in our 50's, active, like to hike, like our sat TV each night, prefer water and 30 amp electric but will boondock for a week if the setting is right. We don't travel with kids so family friendly isn't required. We rate a campground high if it has level sites big enough to open our 4 slides without touching the rig next to us, and good power. Price wise we like to keep it to $30 or below. Looking on the map it doesn't seem feasible to me to stay at one campground between the two unless we're going to spend a lot of time driving everyday. We travel with two cats so we want to return to the rig each night.
We spent three weeks in Yellowstone last year and still had things on our list to see when we had to leave so we are not the sort of tourist who wants to just drive through the park with a few brief stops next to the road. We will do up to half day hikes but again want to be back at the rig each night so don't want to drive for 90 minutes one way to get to the parks.
Sorry for the long post but I find we get better info when I provide more background about what we are looking for. Thank you.
las vegas Resort (Holiday Travel Park)
Has anyone stay at this park since they changes names? Might try it for a couple of months this winter. I like the location, but have never been in the park. It is on Nellis Blvd. right close to Sam's Town.
RE: Grand Canyon from Kentucky
I just started doing research on this trip and I don't have any definite plans yet. But here are some of the details. We are planning on traveling out west early in June 2009 for 2 weeks. We can't get away any earlier because of school for our 3 boys ages 13, 11, and 8. We are researching visiting Grand Canyon, Las Vegas, Hoover Dam, Bryce Canyon and Arches Canyon. We enjoy hiking, and my wife and I would like to take the boys on an over night horse back camping trip. I think it would be good for the boys to experience the western theme stuff as much as possible. I like the full hook ups at Mather Campground. But, I have not done any research on the other National Parks that I mentioned.
RE: Is it worth joining a RV Resorts?
We have two memberships. One with Sunrise resorts- Bullhead City AZ and also one with Hacienda Adventure which is at the Oasis Las Vegas. We do love them both but as it was said earlier if you use it, it is worth it. We also have C2C and Passport America, but we are full-time and use them all the time.
First off, I would not buy a membership at full price. Go to memberships for sale and you can usually get a good price. Yearly dues on ours run approx $350.00 per membership but we are in Las Vegas or Bullhead City (by Laughlin) usually all winter so it works for us.
We have never been turned away even during the holidays, but that doesn't mean it couldn't happen.
I guess it is all up to each individual of what they want and how often they will use it. Consider how much you will use it and check out the prices on the used memberships and make sure you ask how much the yearly dues are.
At both of our parks we are allowed to stay two weeks free and either out for one week or pay for your out week (we always just pay instead of moving all the time).
For both of our parks we found someone who just wanted to stop the yearly dues so we only had to pay for the transfer fee. Membership did not cost us anything, just the transfer fee and yearly dues.
Also ask how much the transfer fee is. Las Vegas was $500.
Good Luck...Janet
RE: going to Bryce and Zion in 2009!
We just did this trip, returned last week. If you are staying 9 days in the area, you can do a decent job seeing these sights. One or two 3-ish mile hikes per day would be a good plan. Here was our itinerary:
Day 0 Arrive Grand Canyon, Trailer Village in the evening.
Day 1 Grand Canyon, drive around rim road, get lay of land, hike South Kaibab trail to Ooh Aah Point.
Day 2 Grand Canyon, helicopter ride (Papillon airline), hike Bright Angel Trail to 1.5 mile rest house.
Day 3 Drive to Glendale, UT, arrive at Glendale KOA. Drive to Zion, hike the Watchman trail
Day 4 Drive to Bryce, hike the slot canyon trail (can't remember the name), drive back to KOA to clean up, drive to Las Vegas for dinner (long drive).
Day 5 Drive to Moab, UT by way of Monument Valley. Arrive at Moab KOA.
Day 6 Get lay of land, Hummer 4x4 trip (Moab Adventure Center, Inc.).
Day 7 Relax by KOA pool, hike Delicate Arch trail at Arches NP.
Day 8 See Dead Horse Point State Park and Canyonlands NP (visitors' center and short hikes only), spend afternoon by KOA pool.
Day 9 Drive to Denver, start of trip home.
Whew! Seen the movie "The Fast and the Furious?"

RE: MD to Yellowstone - What to see along the way?
Mt Rushmore, Bad Lands, Devil's Tower, (Yellowstone), south to Grand Canyon. Turn right for Yosemite, back thru Las Vegas, Mesa Verde, St Louis Arch... better get home.. should be broke by now
Lots to see, it's a beautiful and diverse country...
Ed
Glendale KOA, Glendale, UT
Stayed two nights here, during a tour of Zion NP and Bryce NP. Great location to see the two national parks. We threw in an evening trip to Las Vegas, also. Very friendly staff, easy to access sites, good swimming pool (small but clean and refreshing). Great sandstone hoodoo views from inside the campground. Full hookups, but no cable. Friendly "neighbor" campers. Great experience, two thumbs up.
RE: Lubbock, Tx
Through Clovis and Las Vegas? Yep, I go that way sometimes to Raton.
That does make the Lubbock region a good mid-way break.
Well, then, it all depends on whether or not you need lots of amenities.
If you are just looking for a place to snore for a while, try the Waylon Jennings Municipal RV park in Littlefield. If you are going out US-84, take a right on US-385 North and it's about 1/2 mile.
If you want more KOA style, then there are (1) a decent KOA on the northwest side of Lubbock (take the loop around!) and (2) a couple of reasonable commercial parks near Shallowater, a few miles further up US-84.
sams' town las vegas
Just in case y'all wanted to go swimmin. The Southern Nevada Health District closed the pool and spa at Sams Town yesterday. The office said the fence around the area was not high enough. Yeah right !!!
RE: Cross Country Trip-Are these good CGs or should I Avoid?
We will stay at the Oasis in Las Vegas in a couple of weeks. Looking forward to that. As for Trader's Village in the DFW area, I wouldn't stay there. Instead you may want to consider The Vinyards in Grapevine or the RV Ranch in Burleson.
RE: Cross Country Trip-Are these good CGs or should I Avoid?
Places we have stayed your trip
Las Vegas Oasis one of the better RV parks in town they even have a kids pool with a sand beach. Lots to see in town with the BIG CASINOS and with their free shows Pirate Ship,Volcano,Roman Mall with light show to name a few and don't miss Hoover Dam
Denver Dakota Ridge another nice friendly RV park with a large clean laundry
Amarillo Fort Amarillo good clean friendly park sites have a small fence dividing the sites with a small patio and a patch of grass long enough that we did not need to unhook 35 ft. MH it has a nice gift/home shop for the wife if you like Chinese food there was a good buffet just across the Hwy. and left on the frontage road
Albuquerque Central KOA was a nice clean friendly park when we stayed there an Alt. would be American RV park on the west side of town up on the mesa also a good park don't miss Old Town and there is a great Mexican restaurant in the large mall just off I-40 ask at the RV park it name begans with a G also look for a Rudy's BBQ they don't look like much but great food everything is sold by the pound including beans and cream corn they have picnic tables to eat there and they will give you a loaf of bread and more BBQ sauce to make sandwichs. Have fun
